Q. What is PartingOut.com about?
A. PartingOut.com brings together buyers and sellers of used auto parts. Anyone can participate as either a buyer or seller. We make it easy to find parts, list parts, and negotiate a deal just like you would face-to-face. We help facilitate the transaction, but you make the deal first-hand with the buyer or seller. You can work out payment details on your own, or you can handle payments through our site via PayPalTM.
Q. How much does it cost to use PartingOut.com?
A. If you only wish to buy parts, it doesn't cost you anything-we won't even ask you for your credit card! You are only bound to the payment terms of sellers you interact with.
If you wish to sell parts, you can do so very affordably—see our Fees Policy for our current listing and commission rate, which we bill to your credit card. This allows us to maintain and make improvements to the site. If you wish to use our integrated PayPalTM payment, any fees PayPalTM assesses on your transaction will apply.
Q. Why do I have to register to use PartingOut.com?
A. You are free to search vehicles and part listings without registering. However, if you wish to message someone on the site, or buy or sell parts, you will be directed to either log in or register before you can do so.
This is so the other party knows who they are dealing with, since this site is about person-to-person negotiations and transactions. Our registration is very simple; we only ask for your name, a username and password, an email address, and a mailing address. The reason we need your mailing address is so that sellers know where to ship parts (or send payment). This information is private to others until you finalize a deal with them.
Q. How do I find the Part I want?
A. To find the part you want, you need to search for the vehicle the part belongs to. You can either search by the Year, Make, and Model of the vehicle, or you can simply enter in your vehicle's VIN and those fields will be decoded for you.
PartingOut.com will search for vehicles that match the one you're looking for. Click on any returned listings to see what parts the seller is offering on the vehicle.
What if you find the right vehicle, but the part you want isn't listed? The seller might have it, but just didn't think to list it. In this case you can add a "Buyer Listed Part" to the listing, which informs the seller that you're interested in an unlisted part. This is described below.
Q. What is a "Buyer Listed Part"?
A. Sometimes when searching you'll find the vehicle you were looking for, but the seller hasn't listed the part you need. Fortunately, there's a way to request this part from the seller—and make an offer on it—in one easy step. Just click the "Add Buyer Listed Part" button on a listing. You'll be able to choose the part you want, and create an offer on it. This part gets added to the listing under "Buyer Listed Parts". Only you and the seller will be able to see a Buyer Listed Part that you add. The seller gets an alert about your offer and it's treated just as if you made an offer on a part that was listed.
Q. What if I have Questions about a Part a Seller has listed?
A. In the top right hand corner of every vehicle listing is a "Seller Billboard", with the name, photo, location, membership date, and feedback rating of the seller. There is also an "Ask a Question" button here which you can use to ask a question about that specific listing, or to send the seller a general message. You can review all your questions and messages, both received and sent, in your PartingOut.com dashboard.
Q. I found the Part I want. How do I buy it?
A. To buy a part, you need to negotiate a deal with the seller that you both accept. You start the process by clicking the "Make Offer" button on a part listing.
You can simply offer the amount the seller is asking for—or you can offer less if you want to negotiate. When making an offer, you can also specify the conditions of your offer, whether you want the part shipped to you or if you will pick it up, and the length of time your offer is good for (after which it Expires).
Be sensitive to the time limit of your offer—this starts counting down the moment you submit your offer, and cannot be changed. You'll want to give enough time for the seller to review your offer before it expires. If you need a quick decision, however, you may shorten the time limit to reflect that.
The seller may Accept, Decline, or Counter your offer. If they Counter your offer you will be sent back an alert that shows you the seller's Counter. You can Accept or Decline their Counter, or you can Counter again. You can keep Countering until the offer expires or until one party Accepts or Declines. If the receiving party ignores the offer, it simply expires. You can review all your Offer activity on your PartingOut.com dashboard.
Please note that once you Accept an offer, you are bound to the terms of the deal. You will be shown a preview of the Invoice that will be generated and asked to confirm it. At this point the deal is complete and a record of the transaction appears in the "Parts Purchased" tab of your dashboard.
Q. I made an offer which was accepted. How is invoicing, payment, and shipment of the part handled?
A. Once a deal is complete, a copy of the Invoice is emailed to both parties and you may review it at any time from the "Parts Purchased" or "Parts Sold" tab of your dashboard.
The seller will need to confirm that payment has been received before they ship the part. If the seller accepts PayPal, there will be a button on the invoice to pay via PayPal. Once you've clicked that and made payment, the PartingOut.com invoice will be updated to reflect that payment was received. Alternatively, you may negotiate another mode of payment with the seller (outside of PartingOut.com), and they can manually update the invoice to reflect received payment.
Once it's been verified that the seller has received payment, they will be responsible for shipping the part to you. They will update the invoice in PartingOut.com to indicate that the part has been shipped, which will generate an email to the buyer along with a shipment tracking # (if the seller provides one).
Q. Is there a way for me to cancel a transaction? What about returns or refunds?
A. If you wish to cancel a transaction, you will need to work this out with the seller you made the deal with. If they agree to it the seller can "Void" the transaction, which releases both parties from the deal. A record of the voided transaction will remain in your purchase history for reference.
Returns or refunds are handled differently by every seller, and you should familiarize yourself with their policies before making an offer. Return, shipping, and warranty policies for the seller can be viewed on the vehicle listing itself. You will contact the seller directly to address any transaction-related issues after the deal on PartingOut.com is finalized.
Q. How do I know if a seller on PartingOut.com is reputable?
A. To encourage a fair business environment PartingOut.com offers a feedback mechanism so that buyers and sellers can rate each other. A seller's feedback rating is displayed in the "Seller Billboard", the top right area of every vehicle listing.
ten days after a transaction is complete, both buyer and seller may rate each other on the transaction (an email will be sent with a link to the rating screen). They may also enter in comments. This opportunity to rate each other is open for 30 days, then closes permanently.
By looking at a seller's transaction count and feedback rating, buyers get a fair assessment of the credibility and reputation of sellers.
Q. How do I list Parts for Sale?
A. The first step to listing parts is to create a Seller Profile, which is a FREE upgrade of your existing registration. To begin, simply click on "Sell Parts" on the site's main navigation. If you don't already have a Seller Account, you will be prompted to upgrade to one. This involves providing the following additional information:
Once you've completed this information your Seller Profile is created, and will be able to create a new listing. You can also go back and edit your Seller Profile at any time from the "My Account" link.
To list parts for sale, you first list the vehicle the parts belong to, and then add the parts to the vehicle listing. Clicking on "Sell Parts" once your Seller Profile is created will send you to the Create Listing screen, where you will enter details about the vehicle, upload pictures of it, and enter in the parts you have available to sell.
If you need to quit before your listing is complete it will be saved in Draft mode, and you can come back to it later via your dashboard. When you're ready to make it live, click on the "Publish" button.
Q. What is "auto-accept"?
A. Auto-accept is a setting you can apply to individual parts which basically says "if someone offers me my asking price on this part automatically accept it and generate the invoice". This frees you up from having to review and manually accept the offer if meeting the asking price is the only criteria you need.
Q. What if I need to change a listing after I published it?
A. Click on your "Parts for Sale Listings" tab in your dashboard for a list of your listings to choose the one you want to edit. Once a listing is published, you will not be able to edit the vehicle specs. However, you can still add/change photos and add/change parts. Note the following for parts that you previously published:
Q. How do I see competing offers I've received on parts I have listed?
A. You can see all your offers for all your listings on your PartingOut.com dashboard, but sometimes you just want to compare offers on the same part for the same listing.
To do that, simply browse to the listing in question. If you're logged in and it's your listing, you will see at the bottom of it a list of all offers just on that listing, sorted by part. You'll also see any messages you received that refer to that listing. This gives you an at-a-glance view of activity on a particular listing, and allows you to compare competing offers for parts on it.
Q. What if I accepted an offer but I don't receive payment? Or what if I can't deliver the part for some reason?
A. As a seller, you have the option to Void a transaction anytime after a deal has been finalized. This essentially cancels the transaction and relists the part involved. Some reasons for voiding a transaction may be:
It is advisable to communicate with the buyer prior to voiding a transaction so that everyone knows what to expect and why. This will protect you from receiving negative feedback on your Seller Profile. If you already received payment from the buyer you will be responsible for handling refunds or adjustments. A record of the voided transaction will remain in your sales history for reference.
